While criminal charges are pending against former Department of Corrections employee Captain Edgar Johnson, a civil suit has been filed against the Department by several women who say they were sexually assaulted while incarcerated.
The Emanuel Women’s Facility in Swainsboro, GA has been at the heart of a series of news stories following allegations of sexual abuse. The women say the incidents happened over four years time when Johnson would threaten to deny parole, prohibit visitation with family members, and lengthen the term of their sentence.
The comprehensive lawsuit also demands that the Georgia Department of Corrections create a task force aimed at reducing sexual assault in prisons and increasing training for employees.
The suit has been filed in United States District Court.
